Numerous laboratory slim tube studies and other lab investigations have supported no heat Huff-n-Puff heavy oil recovery with EORGAS. These tests also suggest the CO, act as a “wedge” to displace the associated long-chain HC and kerogens away from the asphaltene molecules, effectively reducing cross-sectional diameter of the asphaltene molecule and increasing its mobility.
Costs per MCF of EORGAS produced range from $3.60 – $5.20 (US) depending on local factors (e.g., fuel, labor, CAPEX amortization). Incremental EOR costs per BO recovered would range from $8 – $11 (US).
In Oklahoma, a wellbore remediation project, having ~4% montmorillonite in a clayey standstone, was treated with EORGAS by a Huff-n-Puff process. Prior to treatment the 34° API, averaged 0.4 bopd. Post treatment, the well increased to 1.1 bopd (a 2.75x), which has been maintained for the past 3 years. During the flowback (Puff period) when EORGAS was present, the well averaged >4+ bopd for ~5 days.
In US, a full-scale field project, on a conventional reservoir is in progress by an existing EORGAS licensee.
Negotiations are currently in progress for a heavy oil application (US) with another potential licensee and other Canadian heavy oil producers.
